AURORA at the 4th Copernicus Contributing Missions Workshop

7–8 October 2026

The AURORA project was represented at the 4th Annual Copernicus Contributing Missions (CCM) Workshop by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), an AURORA project partner. The participation highlighted the project's work on the use of thermal infrared (TIR) satellite data and contributed to discussions on expanding its applications in future Earth observation services.

Organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), the workshop brought together experts, satellite data providers, researchers and representatives of the Copernicus community to exchange knowledge and discuss the evolving role of Contributing Missions in supporting European Earth observation capabilities.

During the workshop, the AURORA project was represented in two sessions focusing on the current applications and future potential of thermal infrared (TIR) satellite observations.
The first session featured a presentation by Mikko Strahlendorff from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), highlighting how TIR data is used within the AURORA project and its relevance to the broader Earth observation community.
On the following day, AURORA was also represented in an expert panel discussion exploring opportunities to expand the use of TIR satellite data in the future. The discussion addressed emerging applications, evolving user needs and the potential for wider integration of thermal infrared observations into Copernicus services.

FMI's participation provided an important opportunity to showcase AURORA's activities to the European Earth observation community and contribute project perspectives to discussions on future satellite data capabilities.
